Ancient and noble Northern America family, of clear and ancestral virtue, that has worldwide spread over the centuries. This family is originally from England where already it flourished nobly in all its branches. But it went far beyond national borders, finding nobility also in Ireland, France, Australia and United States. As we learn from the fundamental heraldic work of Edmund Lodge "The Genealogy of the Existing British Peerage", this family, originally known as Woodchurch, took its surname from the lands of Woodchurch, in Kent, which it held at the time of the Conquest. Clarke Woodchurch, esquire, son of Sir Simon Woodchurch and Susan Clarke, daughter and heir of Henry Clarke, esquire, inherited his mother's estates and assumed the surname of Clarke.
