Famille Astigiana, rapidement élevée à de très hautes distinctions. C'est la plus largement titrée parmi les familles piémontaises. Figure à Asti, où de Catena eut le palais plus tard, à partir du XVIe siècle, avec Nicolò, père de Girolamo et ancêtre de Giambattista et Nicolò, à qui l'approvisionnement en poudres, céréales et fournitures en temps de guerre procura de vastes richesses.
