Famiglia oriunda del Monferrato, e costituente una delle tre diramazioni Cocconito, Coccastello e Malpassuto, in cui si suddivisero i convassalli di Montiglio. Essi convassalli facevano uso fin dal secolo XIII del titolo comitale, cioé da quando i C. nel 1228 riconobbero il proprio feudo da Bonifacio, marchese del Monferrato, il quale concesse loro anche il titolo di conte. Nel 1683, ai 26 novembre, essi ottennero la conferma del titolo da parte del duca di Mantova Ferdinando Carlo. il ramo da cui discende l'attuale famiglia risale ad un Giovanni Maria investito del feudo di Montiglio il 6 dicembre 1519. Da lui, attraverso le persone di Secondino, investito il 13 ottobre 1567, Lorenzo, nominato nell'investitura 15 luglio 1589, Secondo, nato verso il 1590, ammogliato con Caterina Balbo e morto verso il 1677, e Federico, nato il 20 ottobre 1626, ammogliato il 29 novembre 1654 con Francesca Sebregondi, discende il conte Luigi C.,
