Cognome strano certo non di origine italiana; una tradizione formata da tempo presume che a questa famiglia fosse appartenuto Coccio Nerva XIII imperatore romano, nato a Narni (vicinissimo ad Amelia) da famiglia narnese, oriunda dell'isola di Creta. Si hanno notizie di questa casata fin dal 1449 nella persona di Menicuccio Coccej che fu padre di Bernardino e Toma, di Bernardino (1486). In Germania visse tra il 1672 ed il 1755 Samuele Cocieio, nato in Eidelberg, che fu giureconsulto, ministro di Stato, capo della Giustizia e Cancellieri di Prussia sotto Federico II che lo creó Barone.
