Questa famiglia, alla quale viene attribuita la fondazione, avvenuta nel 1221, di una cappella e di un altare nella chiesa di S. Agostino di Montepulciano, fu decorata da Cosimo I della cittadinanza fiorentina subito dopo la conquista di Siena, e godè in patria i primi onori incominciando da Mangiardino, di Giovanni e di Caterina Benci, nominato Gonfaloniere di Montepulciano nel 1512. Parte assai notevole nella vita cittadina ebbero da tale epoca i Cocconi, alcuni dei quali si distinsero pure nella professione delle armi, come quell'Angelo che, sotto le bandiere di Don Giovanni dei Medici, combattè in Ungheria contro i Turchi. Con atto 25 giugno 1677, rog. Ser Simone Spadani notaro orvietano, Pietro Antonio Binincasa, unitamente alla moglie Paola Silvestrucci, fece donazione universale a Giuseppe, di Lelio, con obbligo di assumere il cognome e lo stemma del donatore.
