Originaires de l'Ile-de-France. Etablis dans l'Orléanais avec Nicolas Colas, conseiller de Philippe de France (1360). Jacques Colas, capitaine de cent hommes d'armes, grand prévôt de France, prit une part active aux guerres de la Ligue. Des capitaines, des mestres de camp, des brigadiers des armées du roi; des chevaliers de St-Jean de Jérusalem et de St-Louis; nombreux échevins d'Orléans; un conseiller du roi, receveur des tailles à Montargis au XVIIème siècle, etc. Trois branches principales: Colas de Malmusse; - Colas de Lanoue; - et Colas des Francs. Cette dernière établie de nos jours, au château de Lavée près Yssingeaux, à la suite d'alliance au XIXème siècle, avec les de Luzy, remonte sa filiation à François Colas des Francs, seigneur de Villepain, père d'autre François, échevin et député aux Etats de Blois en 1588, marié à Jeanne Durant.
