Antigua e ilustre familia de Friuli Venezia-Giulia, sin embargo originaria de Sicilia, de virtud clara y ancestral, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia y el mundo. Se cree que la familia llegó a la zona de Udine desde Sicilia en la primera mitad del siglo X sexto, tal vez como una rama de la noble familia Cola. De hecho, el origen de esta cognominación se encuentra en el patronímico del nombre Nicola, pero los sufijos -utto y -utti son típicamente friulianos. En cualquier caso, los primeros testimonios del Colautto en Ronchis (Udine) ocurrieron en 1551.
