Famiglia di origine milanese passata in Sicilia, dice Inveges, la quale trasse il cognome dal possesso della terra di Colnago nel monte di Brianza. Sostenne cariche rilevanti, e potè vantare uomini illustri, come a dire un Simone esimio filosofo, avendo dal duca Visconte ottenuto quella terra; un Giannandrea amico e confidente di S. Carlo Borromeo; un Giambattista sindaco perpetuo, ecc. Un Vincenzo Colnago poi fu il primo a trapiantarla in Sicilia nel 1470; da lui un Antonio, da cui discendono i baroni di S. Venera in Palermo. Altro Antonio figlio di Giovanmaria comprò detto feudo nobile col mero e mistro impero 1603; tenne l'ufficio di senatore in Palermo, e fu uno dei fondatori dell'isituto delle figliuole disperse. Un Giuseppe ebbe carica di tesoriere del regno 1645, essendo stato senatore il 1634; un Tommaso senatore 1643; un terzo Antonio si casò in Catania, ed altri che per brevità tralasciamo. Altro ramo.
