Le origini di questa storica famiglia si perdono nell'oscurità dei secoli, ravvolte da narrazioni leggendarie e favolose. Chi riferisce che discenda da Ercole..., altri da quel Mario (fratello di un console romano) che avendo ridotto i Traci, ribelli, all'obbedienza e quindi soggiogata la Libia innalzò in quei luoghi varie colonne onde tramandare ai posteri le sue gloriose gesta. Ed a dimostrare la sua potenza prese ad insegna della propria casa una colonna d'argento nello scudo rosso. Comunque sieno le origini dei C., variamente descritte, certo è fra le famiglie private d'Europa una delle più grandi ed illustri. Essa conta, nei primi tempi del cristianesimo diversi papi: S.
