Antica ed assai nobile famiglia calabrese, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del Mondo. Sulla sua origine vi sono due differenti ipotesi. L'una vuole questa famiglia oriunda dalla Normandia e giunta nel Regno di Napoli con un Guglielmo, capitano dei Balestrieri di Carlo I d'Angiò, il quale, in compenso dei servigi resigli, gli concesse il feudo di Colosimo, da cui i discendenti avrebbero tratto il loro cognome. L'altra, più accreditata, trova la culla di questa nobile casata in Spagna, ove era conosciuta come Colosia. Giunta in Italia al tempo di Re Federico II, pose la propria dimora in Calabria e, nel XVI secolo, ebbe la la signoria sul territorio poi conosciuto come Colosimi. Questa seconda teoria risulta confermata dal fatto che il toponimo "Colosimi" sia genitivo di "Colosimus", per significare fondazione o mansione di un Colosimo, il che attesta che Colosimi
