Antigua y muy noble familia de Calabria, de clara y ancestral virtud, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Italia y del mundo. Hay dos hipótesis diferentes sobre su origen. El que quiere que esta familia se originó en Normandía y llegó al Reino de Nápoles con un Guillermo, capitán de los ballesteros de Carlos I de Anjou, quien, a cambio de sus servicios, le otorgó el feudo de Colosimo, del cual los descendientes tendrían Trato su apellido. El otro, más acreditado, encuentra la cuna de esta noble casa en España, donde se la conocía como Colosia. Llegó a Italia en la época del rey Federico II, instaló su hogar en Calabria y, en el siglo XVI, tuvo dominio sobre el territorio más tarde conocido como Colosimi.
