In val Curone e sulla destra del torrente omonimo tra Gremiasco e Fabbrica un piccolo agglomerato di case costituisce l'abitato di Colombassi; agli inizi del XII sec. i signori del lugo, che ne avevano assunto il nome, risiedevano a Tortona, a Voghera e in tempi posteriori anche a Castelnuovo. Il predicato "di Colombassi" veniva tuttavia arbitrariamente alterato e addirittura deformato tanto da riscontrare con frequenza ed in atti pubblici di una certa importanza, le voci di Columbesio, Colomberi, Colimbassi ed altre ancora. Le prime notizie della famiglia si riferiscono a Teodosio, teste in atto del 26 marzo 1132 con cui i consoli di Tortona investono Oberto Scopelli ed Anselmo Bussinello di un manso alla Frascheta. L'assedio del Barbarossa e la distruzione della città coinvolse anche i Colombassi che dovettero abbandonare la residenza tortonese, condizione imposta dalla resa a tutti gli abitanti (17 aprile 1155), e ritirarsi in val Curone quasi
