Di sangue longobardo, ebbe origine da Sergio Conte della repubblica di Amalfi, e perciò detta Comite. Ebbe nobiltà in Napoli, al seggio Capuano, in Salerno al seggio di Portanova, in Amalfi, in Benevento, in Bari, in Messina, in Monteleone e in Sorrento; e fu signora di ventinove feudi. Nel secolo X si divise in molti rami: Maurone dette origine al ramo detto Comite Maurone di Amalfi; Enrico, si stabilì in Messina al tempo di Carlo d'Angiò; Riccardo essendo castellano di Bari nel 1240 trapiantò la sua famiglia in quella città. Altro ramo fiorì in Salerno, estinto nel 1682.
