Segundo Campanile, o progenitor desta família é Riccardo, senhor de Alvignano em Terra di Lavoro. Mas as primeiras notícias seguras dele remontam apenas a um Giovanni, de Girolamo, que viveu em Nápoles no início do século XV. Seu filho Ângelo iniciou a construção daquele prédio que hoje abriga o museu Filangieri - que foi uma das mais belas joias arquitetônicas do século XV. , que ali conheceu por ocasião da cabeça de seu filho Leonardo. Foram estes de 1487 a 1494 procurador do Duque da Calábria e no final do domínio aragonês r. conselheiro e conservador do imóvel. Em 20 de janeiro de 1495, o rei Alfonso concedeu-lhe o passe de Canne sull'Ofanto como feudo. Com a queda dos aragoneses foi investigado por rebelião, absolvido, em 1512 obteve a posse de Pietra Variana, que mais tarde deu à sua filha Consalvo Cordavo, Elvira duquesa de Sessa, recebendo em troca Carife no Ultra principado. Seu sobrinho Giovannangelo, filho de seu irmão Francesco, continuou a família: ele tinha o feudo de Carife e o outro de Casalnuovo herdado de seu antepassado. G.B. di Crollalanza, edito presso la direzione del giornale araldico, Pisa 1888; disegno conservato presso la Biblioteca estense universitaria nell'opera "Araldo, nel quale si vedono delineate e colorite le armi de' potentati e sovrani d'Europa, delle più cospicue d'Italia ...," del frate minore osservante Angelo Maria da Bologna. Note: il Crollalanza non blasone le otto punte delle stelle.
