Al dir di autorevoli storici, quali il Ciampi, il Sansovino, il Corio, i Confalonieri di Piacenza avrebbero avuto origine da un ceppo unico di Milano distintosi all'epoca dell'insediamento di S. Eustorgio, verso il 313, voluto arcivescovo di Milano dal popolo e confermato da papa Silvestro e da Costantino imperatore e con solenne rito dai membri di tale famiglia introdotto in Milano e posto sulla sedia arcivescovile, privilegio passato ai discendenti. I membri della famiglia, o difensori della chiesa, furono per la loro origine puramente guelfi; la discendenza di questi cavalieri si propagò per tutta la Lombardia. Il Campi ricorda un Lantelmo Confaloniere vessillifero nella prima crociata Piacentina bandita del vescovo Aldo Eugubino (1097), ma la prima notizia certa, documentata della famiglia è quella fornitaci da una certa del monastero della Colomba di Piacenza, del 13 luglio 1136, in cui appare un Oberto presente con altri nobili Piacentini ad
