Antigua y muy ilustre familia siciliana, de origen español, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. El origen de esta cognominación, en nombre de ilustres genealogistas, debe buscarse, de hecho, en una modificación del apellido español "Gonçalves", a su vez, una forma patronímica del nombre castellano "Gonzalo" (= luchador, luchador).
