Fino dai primi tempi della veneta repubblica fu annoverata tra le dodici famiglie qualificate del titolo di apostoliche per avere eletto il primo Doge e con le quali fu stabilito il corpo della nobiltà patrizia. Fu inoltre delle tribunizie a Rialto, ed ebbe più volte la reggenza generale. Possedette la contea d'Joppe o del Zaffo nella Siria per concessione di Caterina Cornaro regina di Cipro, e fu signora di Ascalona, Rama, Mirabel e Ibelin. Dette alla repubblica ben otto Dogi, molti Senatori Provveditori, Savi di Terraferma, Ambasciatori, Procuratori di San Marco, podestà, inquisitori, capitani, generali ecc., e nella gerarchia ecclesiastica ebbe, oltre quattro Patriarchi di Venezia un Cardinale, Gaspare, creato da Paolo III nel 1585. Fu confermata nel titolo comintale e nelle Signorie dallo Stato Veneto con Decreto del Senato 13 settembre 1784 e confermata poi nella patrizia nobiltá con Sovrana Risoluzione 1° dicembre 1818.
