Antica famiglia del Patriziato della cittá di Cosenza. Il Castiglione Morelli la dice originaria di Bari, trasferita in Cosenza per controversie con la famiglia della Marra, che, a sua volta, si trasferí in Napoli. Il primo a stabilirsi in Cosenza fu Pietro Contestabile, al tempo di Re Ladislao. Riconoscimento di nobiltá generosa nel 1834, nella Pruova a R. guardia del Corpo del nobile Giuseppe Contestabile Ciaccio. La famiglia é iscritta genericamente nell'Elenco Ufficiale Nobile Italiano del 1922 col titolo di Patrizio di Cosenza (maschi) in persona dei discendenti da Giuseppe, R. Guardia del Corpo nel 1834. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi, e il loro casato da' nomi proprii paterni, e de' maggiori.
