Famiglia ritenuta di origine germanica, passata nel Regno di Napoli con un Landolfo, al seguito dell'imper. Federico II di Svevia. Prese il nome dalla signoria presso Sessa, prima dimora della famiglia. Un ramo, oggi estinto, passò a Napoli, ove fu iscritto al Seggio di Nido e vi ebbe singolari illustrazioni. Luise ebbe il possesso di Polignano (Bari) nel 1480, elevato a marchesato nella persona del di lui fratello Gaspare, valoroso guerriero ed umanista, con privilegio del Re cattolico del 22 nov. 1509. Francesco, principe di Massalubrense, fu capitano del popolo nella rivoluzione di Masaniello e vi perdette miseramente la vita. Altro ramo passò a Tropea e fu iscritto a quel nobile patriziato, nel 1508. A questo appartennero: Gaspare, barone di Badolato, battutosi valorosamente a Lepanto con un gran numero di calabresi; Iganzio, che combatté, nel 1814, contro i francesi a Borgoforte; Carlo fu deputato al Parlamento Napoletano nel 1848.
