In una vita di suor Maria Caterina (1667-1694), religiosa nel monastero del Corpus Domini di Modena e morta in odore di santità, stampata in Modena nel 1697 da un Padre gesuita, si afferma che "la casa C. hebbe la sua prima origine in Ferrara; d'onde trasportata a Modena fin dal tempo del Ser.mo Ercole secondo di gloriosa memoria, felicemente v'allignò". Sta invece di fatto che fin dalla prima metà del secolo XV si hanno notizie in carte modenesi della famiglia C. provenienente dal contado di Lucca, probabilmente dal paese di Corfino da cui il cognome. Figura nei cataloghi delle famiglie modenesi del 1610, del 1628 e del 1673. Il 28 dicembre 1819, per decreto del podestà e dei conservatori di Modena, il sig. Annibale di Francesco veniva, a sua richiesta, creato nobile ed ascritto al ceto conservatorio e al Libro d'oro unitamente ai figli e discendenti maschi, all'infinito. Membri viventi:
