In einem Leben von Schwester Maria Caterina (1667-1694), einer Ordensfrau im Kloster Corpus Domini in Modena, die im Duft der Heiligkeit starb und 1697 in Modena von einem Jesuitenpater gedruckt wurde, heißt es, dass „der C. Haus hatte seinen ersten Ursprung in Ferrara, von wo aus es seit der Zeit von Ser.mo Ercole, dem zweiten ruhmvollen Andenkens, nach Modena transportiert wurde und dort glücklich lebte". Tatsache ist jedoch, dass wir seit der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts in modenesischen Zeitungen Nachrichten über die Familie C. haben, die aus dem Umland von Lucca stammen, wahrscheinlich aus der Stadt Corfino, von der der Nachname stammt. Es erscheint in den Katalogen der Familien von Modena aus den Jahren 1610, 1628 und 1673. Am 28. Annibale di Francesco wurde auf seinen Wunsch hin adelig geschaffen und zusammen mit seinen Söhnen und männlichen Nachkommen ad infinitum der Konservatoriumsklasse und dem Goldenen Buch zugeschrieben.
