Famiglia antichissima di Venezia e fino dalla sua fondazione. Diede personaggi distinti nelle scienze, nelle lettere e nelle carriere militari ed ecclesiastiche. Si notano degni di speciale menzione: Giovanni di Andrea che nel 1238 fu ambasciatore a papa Gregorio IX per la tregua coi genovesi, poi ambasciatore all'imper. Federico II. Marco di Giovanni nel 1278 fu generale dell'armata veneta contro gli Anconitani, quindi contro i Triestini ribellatisi ai Veneziani. Altro Marco di Giovanni fu insigne magistrato, militare e uomo politico, ambasciatore al re di Ungheria per la pace (1352) ed all'imperatore Carlo IV (1354). Vicedoge durante l'interregno della congiura del doge Marino Faliero (1355) ambasciatore di nuovo al re d'Ungheria (1356) ed a Carlo IV (1360). Eletto doge di Venezia (1365), morì il 12 gennaio 1367 nell'età di 82 anni e venne sepolto nella chiesa dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo. Caterina di Marco nel 1469 fu presa in moglie da
