Famiglia assai antica ed illustre, originaria del territorio di Lucca, i nomi dei suoi componenti si trovano soprattutto ricordati in contratti di acquisto di terre e case sin dai tempi antichi. Nel corso dei secoli vari membri di questa illustre casata si propagarono in diverse regioni d'Italia, prevalentemente in Lombardia ed in Emilia, e vi furono accolti nelle importanti cariche della città dove ebbero dimora. Sull'origine di questo cognome esistono due tesi, la prima è che derivi dalla parola corrotti che in italiano antico si scriveva con una sola erre e le prove consisterebbero in un esiguo numero di personaggi così cognominati che hanno avuto problemi con la legge, tra questi ricordiamo Benedetto, artista di talento in Venezia accusato di sacerdozio simulato nel 1870. La seconda, con cui concordiamo, è che sia un ramo dei nobili Corot di Francia, chiamati anche Corotì fino al XIX secolo, ipocoristico
