Famiglia quasi sovrana che ebbe a capostipite un Fragerio di Guido del contado di Reggio e che nel 1009 già era signore del castello da lui edificato col nome di Correggio, dal quale si denominarono tutti i suoi discendenti. Fregiato questo castello del titolo di contea nobile dall'imperatore Federico III, i da Correggio ne furono creati assoluti signori. Nel 1616 l'imperator Mattia eresse Correggio in città e principato che fu dall'omonima famiglia posseduto fino al 1631. Gilberto Correggio trovandosi in Parma nel 1303, ed avendo favorito il ritorno dei fuorusciti guelfi, ottenne la signoria di quella città. Gli succedette Azzo nel 1328, ed altri ancora della famiglia quantunque interrottamente a causa delle fazioni che per ambizion del potere si levarono contro i da Correggio. Spaccato di uno, partito di due, formante sei quartieri; nel primo e sesto d'oro, all'aquila di nero coronata del campo; nel secondo di rosso, alla correggia di nero piegata in cerchio; nel terzo e quarto d'azzurro, al leone d'oro; nel quinto di rosso, al cane d'oro assiso sopra un terreno di verde: col capo dello scudo d'oro, caricato dall'aquila bicipite uscente di nero, ciascuna testa coronata d'oro. Sul tutto di rosso, alla fascia d'argento.
