Há em Portugal diversas famílias deste apelido, umas procedentes de Espanha, outras naturais do próprio país. Destas, nem todas tomaram o apelido igualmente, pois algumas tiraram-no de alcunha, enquanto outras o tomaram de localida-des, como vila C.. Na região de Miranda do Corvo, à Lausã, existe uma família C., a que pertenceu Manuel Lopes Caetano C. Serra, capitão-mor da vilas da Lousã e Serpins e do couto de Semide, o qual teve Carta de brasão de armas, passada a 14-XII-1771, em que se lhe concederam por sucessão as armas dos Limas, Serras, Gonçalves e Corteses, estas como a seguir se descreve: De prata, com uma cruz florenciada de vermelho, rodeada de chamas de azul. Alguns autores atribuem as armas de Fernão C., conquistador do México, aos Corteses de Portugal, o que é erro, pois estes são anteriores ao herói espanhol.
