Il Della Cella nelle sue "Famiglie genovesi" scrive, che i Morteo o Morteto o Mortuto sono nobili ed antichi cittadini genovesi. Una tradizione, non documentata però li vorrebbe un ramo della famiglia Multedo. Già nel 1149 un Ansaldo de Morteto piglia in appalto gabelle; nel 1247 si incontra un Nicolò Morteto console: nel 1265 Guglielmo, dottore in legge, era uno dei 4 nobili incaricati di scrivere gli annali del Comune e così nel 1266 e 1267. Lo storica Giustiniani dice che nel 1268 la famiglia Morteo era fra le più insigni e nobili della città. Di essa sono pure da ricordare: Simone uno dei 7 provveditori nel 1447 e Vincenzo anziano nel 1508. Gli attuali rappresentante della famiglia provengono da Alassio e discendono, secondo a quanto appare dalle genealogie dello Staglieno, da Bernardo; il cui figlio Giovanni Serafino nato ad Alassio il 25 novembre 1742 ed ivi morto il
