Urgnese cerca de Cavasso Carnico fue la cuna de esta familia, cuya genealogía parte de un Cándido, hijo de un Domenico Zoppo, que vivió en la segunda mitad del siglo XIV junto con su hijo Valentino en esa pequeña aldea de Friulian y luego se mudó a Spilimbergo. Desde las primeras noticias, los Cossio parecen personas laboriosas, inteligentes y dedicadas al comercio, a través de las cuales reunieron una gran facultad, lo que les permitió aspirar a la nobleza.
