Desde os tempos mais remotos, é atestada a presença dessa família no Reino de Nápoles, na sede de Montagna e na sede de Portanuova. Diz a lenda que deriva de um alemão cavaleiro, nascido na cidade de Constança, chamado "Scipi" ou dito, em deferência à sua terra natal, "Costanzo".
