Su antiguo nombre era Costanza o dei Costanzi; una rama vivía en Saluzzo y otra en Costigliole, de donde tomó su nombre moderno. El primero de los que tenemos ciertos recuerdos es un castillo de William de Saluzzo en 1192, que tuvo numerosos descendientes de los cuales surgieron varias ramas, que distinguir entre ellos apelaron algunos Costanzi o Costigliole, otros de Burgo, otros de Garro o Garroni y otros del Palazzo. Con la excepción de los Costanzi, todas las demás ramas se extinguieron durante más de dos siglos. Cubrieron las posiciones más llamativas entre el marqués de Saluzzo. En 1215 el mencionado Gugielmo obtuvo de la marcha. Manfredi II investidura del castillo y la villa de Costigliole, donde hace unos años todavía había algún vástago de esta familia. Otra rama Antigua y noble familia de Lombardía.
