Antigua y noble familia llamada Cotta o Cottu, decorada con el título de marqués, originario del territorio de Niza, se extendió a Sicilia en el siglo XVI. La nobleza antigua de la familia Cotta se confirma por la presencia del blasón en los principales blindados italianos. El escudo de armas de la familia Cotta está estampado de la siguiente manera: rojo, con tres monturas plateadas que se mueven desde la punta cargada por una serpiente retorcida en una banda negra: coronada por una tez, brazos vestidos de plata; con la cabeza cosida en azul cargada con tres estrellas de ocho rayos dorados. Otra rama Familia senatorial que sobresalió en Milán desde principios del siglo X y quería venir de Roma. El pintoresco Valcuvia tenía un feudo, confirmado a Pietro Cotta por el duque Francesco Sforza con un diploma fechado el 11 de marzo de 1450. Le dieron a los ancianos del país, cónsules de justicia, senadores y decuriones; y muchos eran podestàs en las principales ciudades de Italia. Pomponius jurisconsult en 1550, lector público en las escuelas de Canobbian en 1557, obtuvo la ciudadanía romana del papa Pío IV; y por Gregorio XIII fue elegido obispo de Novara. El escudo de armas de la familia Cotta de Lombardía está estampado de la siguiente manera: dorado, con el águila extendida en negro, cargado con un escudo rojo con un escudo dorado. Otra rama Antigua y noble familia noble veneciana en Verona desde tiempos muy remotos. El escudo de armas de la familia Cotta de Verona está blasonado de la siguiente manera: Spaccato; en el primer trimestre descuartizado con verde, azul, plata y negro, en el segundo trimestre descuartizado nuevamente con verde, azul, plata y negro.
