Il nostro dotto Abbate Marolì nel libro quarto della sua Cronica di Sicilia dice che Giovanni di cognome primieramente Selvaggio, e dopo di Scaletta, Dottor di Legge di quei antichi tempi, hebbe per moglie una nobil donna Messinesa di casa Cottone, e vivendo in molto preggio fù da'Senatori della sua Patria mandato Ambasciator all'Imperator Corrado, figlio dell'Imperator Federico II, all'hora
