La famiglia Cremona si trasferì a Reggio E. ove ora risiede, nella metà del secolo XV con Bartolomeo di Giacomo, di Albertino. Nei secoli XIII e XIV ebbe residenza in Modena con Giacomo, suo padre Albertino ed altri. Aveva possidenze interritorio di Modena fino dal principio del secolo XIII, come risulta da docimenti degli archivi di Modena. ( fra gli altri un pergamena 23 marzo 1271 del Notaio Guglielmo De Monaca, che porta una stipulazione tra un "Dominus Jacopinus quondam magnifici Domini Petri Cremonii" ed un Gonzaga). Precedentemente la famiglia C. risiedeva a Pavia, di dove si trasferì a Modena al principio del secolo XIII e pare provenisse dalla città di Cremona, dalla quale forse trasse il suo nome. Non accertata l'epoca e il documento della concessione del titolo di nobiltà, di cui era già investita prima del secolo XV e che le venne dai Duchi di Ferrara, Modena e
