Die Familie Cremona zog nach Reggio E., wo sie Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts bei Bartolomeo di Giacomo aus Albertino wohnen. Im dreizehnten und vierzehnten Jahrhundert lebte er mit Giacomo, seinem Vater Albertino und anderen in Modena. Es hatte seit Beginn des 13. Jahrhunderts Besitztümer in der Gegend von Modena, wie Dokumente aus den Archiven von Modena belegen. (unter anderem ein Pergament vom 23. März 1271 des Notars Guglielmo De Monaca, das eine Bestimmung zwischen einem "Dominus Jacopinus quondam Domini Petri Cremonii" und einem Gonzaga enthält). Zuvor lebte die Familie C. in Pavia, wo sie zu Beginn des 13. Jahrhunderts nach Modena zog und anscheinend aus der Stadt Cremona stammte, nach der sie vielleicht benannt wurde.
