Proveniente dalla città di Cremona, dalla quale trasse il suo nome, la Casata Cremona si fermò a Pavia di dove si trasferì a Modena. Nei secoli XIII e XIV ebbe, infatti, residenza a Modena con Giacomo, suo padre Ablertino ed altri. Aveva possessi in territorio di Modena fin dal principio del secolo XIII. La famiglia da Modena si trasferì a Reggio Emilia nel secolo XV con Bartolomeo di Giacomo, di Albertino. Non è accertata l'epoca e il documento della concessone del titolo di nobiltà, di cui era già investita prima del secolo XV, e che le venne dai Duchi di Ferrara, Modena e Reggio, per valore delle armi. Bartolomeo, di Giacomo di Albertino fu investito di un feudo in territorio di Rubiera nel 1478. Guglielmo, noto nel 1491, fu parimenti valoroso armigero del Duca di Ferrara.
