Prime figure preminenti della casata di cui si abbiano notizie certe sono due consoli: uno ad Asti nel 1111 e l'altro a Tortona nel 1137; è quindi presumibile che le rispettive famiglie dimorassero in luogo da epoca più remota considerando che alla suprema carica consolare non assurgeva il primo venuto. Il nome dei C. tuttavia è noto in tutto il suolo italico ove da Roma la potente casata patrizia dilagò in Lombardia, nel Monferrato, in Emilia, nel Veneto, ecc.: propagatasi nella Sabina e nella fascia costiera del Lazio (Marittima) sostenne per circa due secoli, dal 900 al 1100, durissime e sanguinose lotte di predominio per serbare il quale non ebbe scrupoli ad alternare, secondo le circostanze, il proprio atteggiamento politico da bizantino a germanico attribuendosi l'arbitrio di creare, destituire, sopprimere e restaurare non pochi papi, membri, alcuni, della loro stessa famiglia; decadde poi assai rapidamente suddivisa in vari colonnellati ognuno
