Antica ed illustre famiglia veneta, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del Mondo. La tradizione vuole che essa sia giunta nella Repubblica di Venezia dalla Grecia, con due fratelli che, essendo soliti indossare dei cappelli a forma di cresta, furono soprannominati i "Crestani". Ivi, però, essendo insorti contro il Doge di Venezia e venendo sconfitti, persero tutti i propri beni e vennero condannati all'esilio nell'Altopiano di Asiago. Da lì un importante nucleo familiare si portò in Bassano ed infatti ivi già agli albori del XVI secolo abbiamo novella di un Girolamo Crestani, capitano di cavalleria, e nel 1566 di un Joannes, del qu. "Crestani Cusini de Asiago", "preceptore gramatice". Appare dunque evidente che il casato, in breve tempo, fosse riuscito a riacquistare l'antico splendore.
