La antigua familia piamontesa, de clara y ancestral virtud, se extendió a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. El origen de esta cognominación, según genealogistas autorizados, debe buscarse en el municipio de la provincia de Biella "Crevacuore", el lugar de origen de la familia, sobre la cual tenía el señorío. La etimología de este topónimo es parcialmente oscura. La hipótesis más aceptada es esta: "CREPA" = CABRA; "CORIUM" = CUERO, luego CREPA-CORIUM. El país de Crevacuore, por otro lado, era un lugar donde los pastores traían para vender sus productos, especialmente en cuero. En cualquier caso, la tradición dice que este linaje proviene del famoso Aimone, conde de Vercelli, que en 905 tenía el dominio de Crevacuore.
