Família lombarda antiga e muito nobre, conhecida como Crotti ou Crotta mas por vezes também transcrita como Grotti ou Grotta, de virtude clara e ancestral, que se espalhou ao longo dos séculos por várias regiões da Itália, com grandes assentamentos no Piemonte e no Vêneto. Encontra o seu primeiro berço na zona de Bérgamo e descende daqueles nobres lombardos Arimanni, apelidados de "Crotti" porque, como guerreiros a cavalo, se estabeleceram perto de grutas e cavernas, em várias zonas da zona rural de Bérgamo e que, durante a Alta Idade Média , espalharam-se por vários locais da Lombardia, para conquistá-los e guarnecê-los.
