This family is a collateral branch of the family of judges of Arborea, which descended from Niccolò di Bas, brother of Judge Mariano IV. His son Salvatore married Costanza Cubello and Leonardo, their son, began to call himself by his maternal surname. In 1410 Leonardo dealt with the viceroy Pietro Torellò the conditions of surrender of the Giudicato of Arborea, obtaining the feudal investiture of Oristano with the title of marquis and of Goceano with the title of count. In the following years he maintained a relationship of loyal dependence on the kings of Aragon to whom he lent large sums of money, obtaining favors and a pledge from the Barigadu Party and other lands. Having purchased the lordship of the Marmilla district and the part of Valenza, he became the most powerful feudal lord of his time.
