Quien fuera el principal ascendiente y troncal propagador de este ilustre linaje se ignora por su remota antigüedad, siendo por tanto tradicional e inmemorial la nobleza de sus hijos, las cuales han gozado siempre y en todas partes de la consideración y preeminencias correspondientes a sus lustrosos nacimientos, no siendo la menos esclarecida de sus líneas la que se arraigó y floreció en Castilla. Procede de las montañas de Santander. El 19 de diciembre de 1872 se autorizó a Don Manuel de C. y Chacón para usar en España el título pontificio de Conde de las Cuevas. En Canarias se inicia este apellido a través del matrimonio celebrado entre el Conquistador Juan Benítez y Doña María de las C., viuda del Capitán Luis de Vibaldo Spínola.
