Eine alte und sehr edle Familie spanischer Herkunft mit klarer und überlieferter Tugend zog nach Sizilien, zusammen mit einem Fabrizio, der unter der aragonesischen Regierung bedeutende Ämter erhielt. 1393 erhielt die Familie die Herrschaft des Bonalbergo-Lehens in Nikosia mit dem Baronialtitel. Anschließend wurde die Familie in drei Zweige aufgeteilt: den von Malta, den von Reggio-Kalabrien und den von S. Agata dei Goti, aus dem derjenige stammte, der sich in Milazzo niederließ und der am 31. August 1813 zum Adel von Messina erhoben wurde Diese Familie hat es in der Entfaltung ihres Glanzes immer geschafft, eine Reihe von Männern hervorzubringen, die seinen Namen berühmt gemacht haben, im öffentlichen Dienst, in liberalen und kirchlichen Berufen und im Militärdienst.
