La famiglia C. è originaria di Castelnuovo Bormida, con buone tradizioni di civiltà e di onore. Di là si trasferì ad Alessandria con Leopoldo, uomo di leggi, figura cospicua della municipalità alessandrina durante la Repubblica francese. Ne parla largamente Amilcare Bossola nel lavoro Il governo provvisorio piemontese e la municipalità di Alessandria. Per alleanza con la famiglia Gonnet, originaria di Moutiers nell'alta Savoia, illustrata particolarmente dal generale Napoleone Giuseppe Ernesto (n. Alessandria, 9 maggio 1834), che, figlio del generale senatore Gonnet, era stato creato barone il 13 dic. 1868, e fu ultimo di sua casa, il titolo baronale fu rinnovato a favore del nipote di sorella, col Alberto C., con Lettere Patenti 14 nov. 1910. Questi, per adozione dello zio paterno, comm. Cesare, e per decreto della Corte d'App. di Casale, del 9 luglio 1902, aveva aggiunto al proprio il secondo cognome C. e per R. Decreto 21 agosto 1911
