Antigua y muy noble familia del Reino de Nápoles, de clara y ancestral virtud, difundida a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Italia y del mundo. Cuenta la tradición que se originó como rama de la noble familia Como, siendo un fenómeno muy común, en lengua napolitana, el paso de la "o" al diptongo "uo". Y lo confirma además la similitud casi total, salvo por el metal de las estrellas, plata en el Cuomo y oro en el Como, entre los brazos levantados por las dos familias. Así, la familia Como, más tarde también Cuomo, es originaria de la ciudad lombarda del mismo nombre y tuvo como progenitor al caballero Riccano, señor de Albignano.
