Una familia muy antigua y noble, originaria de Amalfi, que tomó el nombre de Curiale, y luego de Correale, de los cargos ocupados. Tenemos los primeros recuerdos de ello en un Ligorio y en un Sergio que, en 1268, prestó dinero a Carlos I de Anjou. Tenía nobleza en Nápoles en el asiento de Oporto, en S. Severino, en Agropoli y en Salerno. Dos de las ramas principales florecieron en Sorrento, una adscrita al Seggio di Porto, la otra en Salerno, donde se agregó a la sede portaretese. Tenía el señorío de 25 baronías, del condado de Terranova y del marquesado de Gerace. Dio cuatro obispos a la Iglesia; muchos eran maestros racionales, jueces y verdugos; Bartolomeo, capitán de guerra general del ducado de Amalfi en 1442; Marino, camarero y consejero de Alfonso I y castellano de Massalubrense, Bitonto, Ferolito y Vico Equense; Casimiro, casinés, extremadamente versátil en lenguas orientales
