Apulian family of ancient and noble tradition, which spread in Rome in the seventeenth century and, subsequently, in different regions of Italy. Cognomination is prior to the 16th century and should derive from the modification of historical phonetics of a Latinization of the Slavic name Kusma, in turn derived from the Greek name Kosmas, probably belonging to the progenitor. The names of the Cusmai are remembered in texts, notarial deeds and contracts for the sale of lands and houses since very remote times, from which it appears that they were in a wealthy and noble condition.
