Familia de Apulia de tradición antigua y noble, que se extendió en Roma en el siglo XVII y, posteriormente, en diferentes regiones de Italia. La cognición es anterior al siglo XVI y debería derivarse de la modificación de la fonética histórica de una latinización del nombre eslavo Kusma, derivado a su vez del nombre griego Kosmas, probablemente perteneciente al progenitor.
