Familia de origen Vicenza que tomó su nombre del castillo de Custoza, anteriormente Custodia, de Custodia y Costoza, castillo ubicado en las laderas de una colina cerca del río Bachilione. En 1583 fue inscrito entre los nobles del Consejo de Vicenza; en el seg. XVII una sucursal se instaló en Mantua. Angelo en 1688 fue asesor de la emperatriz Eleonora y copero del emperador Leopoldo quien, con el privilegio del 20 de junio de 1688, otorgó la nobleza imperial a la familia y con un diploma de Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga, duque de Mantua, recibió el título de comital con sucesión primigenia masculina, confirmada con sup.
