Cette famille est bien véritablement originaire de Bretagne où elle était établie depuis plusieurs siècles. On la retrouve à différentes époques, en divers localités et il y a eu nombreux personnages illustres de ce nom. On signale les personnages dignes de mémoire: Guèrech et Aremburge, sa femme, bàtirent en 987 le chàteau; Chotard se croisa en 1096; Geoffroi combattit à Bouvines en 1214 et se croisa en 1238. La branche ainée fondue au XIV siècle dans la maison de Rochefort, d'où la baronnie a passé successivement aux Rieux, Lorraine-Elbeuf, Lorraine-Mercœur et Vendôme; par acquit aux Boislève, puis en 1657 aux Béthune-Charost. La branche de l'Isle d'Aurillé fondue en 1400 dans du Guesclin; la branche de la Rouvraye fondue vers la même époque dans du Gué. On remarque (dès le XIIIème siècle) des alliances importantes avec des familles nobles en Bretagne et autres régions françaises.
