Familia muy antigua e ilustre, de sus orígenes no hay cierta información, excepto que el apellido es el topónimo de un territorio. Hay dos hipótesis, la primera es que se origina en el territorio de Arelia (Areglia) en Emilia Romagna, del cual tenemos un ejemplo en el siglo XIV con Johannes de Paulus de Arelia, un soldado de fortuna al servicio de los Visconti; el segundo es que proviene de la ciudad de Areglia en Val Curone, de donde derivan la cognominización y la antigüedad milenaria. A lo largo de los siglos, algunos miembros de esta familia se extendieron a diferentes regiones de Italia y sus nombres se encuentran en textos, hechos notorios y contratos para la compra de tierras y casas desde tiempos muy antiguos.
