Famiglia originaria di Ascoli, donde la cognonimizzazione. Questa signoria della Cattedrale e del Capitolo di Ascoli nel castello e paese di Maltignano, è antichissima. Il castello fu fabbricato nell'anno 700 di Roma da Publio Malthino Basso, console ascolano, allorché Ascoli si reggeva a Repubblica. L'imp. Carlo Magno, visto che nell'anno 800, con un suo ampio diploma in data 5 agosto 800, accordò al Capitolo pieno dominio con mero e misto impero, cioè dettar leggi, far giustizia, batter moneta, eleggere il podestà e il capitano della milizia, ecc. ecc. su detto Castello. Tutti questi diritti propri del signore feudale furono esercitati dai canonici della Cattedrale per ben 10 secoli, e se anche qualche volta vi fu chi osò attentare a questa loro signoria, ben presto dovette ritirarsene, e piegarsi avanti al loro diritto non solo antico, ma riconfermato nel corso dei secoli da pontefici e da imperatori.
